Pliney Henry Babbitt

His early days were passed on the farm attending the district school. Later he attended Monson & Shelburne Falls' Academies. He finished his limited and hard earned education at Appleton Academy, New Ipswich, N. H. There he met Lydia Perry, daughter of Asa Perry of Temple, N. H., whom he married June 19, 1839. She was born Oct. 30, 1817, and died Jan. 24, 1865.
Having purchased the old homestead of his father, he resided there most of the time until 1862, making farming his occupation. He also became an auctioneer, continuing as such over a period of sixty years. At this vocation he made his reputation, his native wit and ability to sell, putting him at the head of auctioneers in New England.
In 1862 Mr. Babbitt enlisted as private in Co. F, 53rd Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry, and on the organization of the company was made second Lieutenant. During his time of service he was detailed to various important duties, among them being assistant commissary on the "Continental" carrying supplies to New Orleans. After expiration of service he returned to Barre, but was later called to Washington, where for a year he was recruiting officer.
Returning to Barre he resumed his previous lines of business. He was honored by his townsmen with various offices. Was Constable or Deputy Sheriff for nearly seventy years. His advice was frequently sought and he always proved a good counsellor. He was much interested in the affairs of the town, especially in the church and schools, and did much to stimulate their growth and prosperity. An active, useful and patriotic citizen, as well as a kind and indulgent husband and father. His ninetieth birthday was celebrated in Barre shortly before his death. All his children and grandchildren being present.
